| Hello everyone. I am a casual runner and experience dry mouth during both inside and outside running. People have suggested a few things to solve the problem: gum (annoys my breathing), water (have to carry a bottle or pack on my back). I am not big fan of any of these solutions. What do you think I should use? Thanks for the help! |

I could never run with gum at one time as it felt that it was hard to breathe and now I cannot run without it. It is what i use.
You could try sucking on a small hard candy. _________________

| I carry a water bottle for hydration purposes on any run where I will need it, and chew gum for the dry mouth thing - I find drinking water only makes me feel better till I swallow then I am right back to dry mouth - which of course leads to a weird tickle in the back of my throat. |

Me too. Never used to be able to run and chew, now can't run without it. I also carry water though. I can't for the life of me figure out how people can run without water. I need a drink every 10-15min during my runs.

For me I always used to get dry mouth when I ran after having recently brushed my teeth. Now I wait until I've finished my run to brush, if it's a morning run and if not it's usually been long enough since I last brushed my teeth that it doesn't bother me. _________________

I found that taking a hit of Gu or other running gell stuff really helped me not feel so dry mouthed during my run...that and using Blistex on my lips (the cream like stuff, not the chapstick like stuff).
It made a huge difference, as now I won't drink as much water (nor do I have to carry much) when I run.
So I don't believe it was really a hydration of my body problem as much as it was a hydration of my mouth problem. |

Interesting! Never thought about chewing gum during training or a race. Since I have been a sufferer of kidney stones, I don't leave home without water. Guess I drink water without much thought if my mouth gets dry (maybe not "guess" -- I do). _________________ Louis

I like "Quench" gum...it's made specifically for athletes. It reminds me of the old "Gator Gum"...(oops, I probably just dated myself - haven't seen Gator Gum in YEARS!)
You can get it at Dicks' Sporting Goods in the US.
Comes in a variety pack with orange, lemon and fruit punch flavours.
You can't chew it for very long because it gets hard and nasty, but it really induces your salivary glands to start working...
I chew it for a few minutes and it really works! |
