Don't believe the folklore -- there's no evidence that aspartame is harmful, unless you suffer from the very rare inherited disease PKU, because of the phenylalanine content (a natural amino acid that PKU sufferers can't handle). Here's what Health Canda says:

http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/food-aliment/cs-ipc/chha-ed...

By the way, if you have PKU, you know it, since you'd have to have been diagnosed at birth, otherwise you wouldn't be alive today.

So Diet Coke is nothing more than 99% water, some flavour, and a nice little shot of caffeine.

Enjoy your harmless vice! Smile

I love it, though and I am not giving it up! I also drink 10 glasses of water and get my calcium from skim milk and other healthy sources of lowfat dairy!!

The problem is when soda, or pop, or sugar and /or chemical fortified beverages take the place of other healthy drinks like water and for women, milk (we need the calcium sisters!)

I know, I know, aspartame is bad for me, but I have given up cigarettes, junk food, french fries, red meat, being a couch potato. . . I am Not giving up my diet coke, No No No!

I agree with you totally Jacqueline. Wow, you have really given up alot of things and that is a wonderful accomplishment!! And if you really enjoy your diet coke that much, you should have it. Why should you deprive yourself of everything?? Wink I myself, just cannot stomach that aspartame taste (or aftertaste) in things. So I would rather have no pop than drink diet.

Agree Jacquelin that you should keep this vice....gosh..if we didn't sin a little...we'd have nothing to confess to Wink Laughing

Jane..glad to hear I'm not the only one who gets that wierd after taste from aspartame...I find it metallic..and don't like it at all.

BTW hubbie used to work for Coca Cola (for 18 years) in the days when employees got two free cases of soft drinks a week...and I still never really acquired a tast for them Shocked Exclamation

I would like to cut down on my coffee drinking...three cups a day... Embarassed

Hi Everyone.
I've been away for a couple weeks....my Grandpa had a heart attack so I spent some time back in Illinois where most of my family lives. Gpa is fine now, but it was touch and go for a few days.
Anyway, that time at home was my first big test for no soda. And I'm proud to announce that I did NOT have one soda the entire time I was away. Whew. But it was tough...especially on the drive down and back (16 hours each way) since I really used to enjoy having nice cold Mt Dew on road trips. Don't ask me why...I just did!
I did sub quite a bit of that bottled tea though, and it's full of sugar so I have to be more disciplined now that I am home. And I even managed to run a few times too. It helped when things were getting tense and uncertain.
Well, thanks for the advice. I always look forward to reading about others overcoming their struggles. It gives me hope for myself.
PS-run4fun way to go!

Sorry to hear about your grandfather mahreeuh... glad all's now well.... Pertaining to "soda" (big topic apparently)... for the record (and forum survey) I used to imbibe in diet clear pop (ie 7up) occasionally ... but now I've eliminated that (saccharin issues) and I'm pretty much into having Perrier w/lime (hopefully not to sound snooty)... but it fulfills the 'carbonation' factor, no cal's, and is really basically water... works for me. If I want a change, I'll mix it w/some golden grapefruit juice or tangerine/grapefruit juice... adds some flavour, still healthy, still carbonated, has zest... pop in a few ice cubes.... it's all good!

I somtimes get in the mood to drink dr. pepper every day but then it wears off and I don't drink it for a while, then I get the mood again, drink one a day for about a week and it wears off again, kinda like a cycle or something.

especially near my period when I need more fuel and more thristy at the same time I will crave a pop.

Its only 45 more days until the end of the year - how you holding up on not drinking any pop?

I must admit that I am a coke (classic) addict! I love it first thing in the morning, at lunch, in the afternoon, at night - pretty much any time of the day! I might have to follow your example and try to cut down on my nasty little habit.....

Congrats for doing so well.

Sorry it's taken me so long to reply...I'm in the process of trying to find/get a job so I don't get on here as much as I'd like. I had to go back and see when I first made this post....18 Aug. Wow. Well, it's been almost 3 months now and still not a single ounce of soda has passed through these lips. It's kinda funny, eventhough I really haven't had too many cravings (though there have been a few times...) it's like my brain makes up for it but dreaming about soda. How pathetic is that? On occasion I have woken up in a panic because I was dreaming about drinking a soda and it tasted SO GOOD. lol. Crazy.

I am now trying to decide if I will have a soda on New Years Day...I know I want to, but I don't know if I should. What do you all think? Anyway, thanks again for the encouragement.

42 more days and counting until the end of the year!
If you really want to have a coke on New Years Day - Go for it! One won't kill you. Although since you haven't drank Coke for four months its going to taste pretty different from what you remember. I know that when I don't drink coke for a few days and then have a glass it doesn't taste right.

I must say you have inspired me - maybe one of these days I'll cut down (or out) on my coke consumption. Maye for new years that will be my resolution.....

Good luck on the Job hunt - let us know when you find the one that you are looking for.

My recommemdation is carbonated water. When I started drinking it (I had to, because that's what 90% of the people here drink) It tasted a bit funny, but after a few days it just tastes like water. It offers the same satisfaction as pop because of the fizzines. If you don't like the taste try mixing it 50/50 with apple juice (another very popular drink option here), then you get less sugar and less of the scary acids that can be found in pop. I think at home, i.e. North America, it's called Club Soda unless you're buying Perrier. Give it a go. Worked really well for me. I find that if I start drinking pop again, then i really crave it, but if I never touch it, then I don't want it either.

Good luck! Smile

Yeah, Orangina -- which is quite popular in Europe -- is essentially a mix of orange juice and carbonated mineral water. Quite refreshing.

I used to drink these (a few) when I was a kid, a teen, and a young adult. Never more than 1 per day however - not even that much. I just can't stand them anymore. I now drink more milk that I ever did to build up calcium. I can't stand sugar. I used to eat lucky charms, alphabits and Cheerios cereal in my childhood and youthhood. I can't stand those anymore because of the sugar and now eat presidents' choice toasted oats (less sugar than Cheerios). Now I love toast.
