Injuries must be taken seriously no matter how small they may seem. As it has been said before "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."

I'm a doctor, and i have to say I don't always follow my own advice...
But the best thing to do when you get an injury is RICE!
R - rest the injured area
I - ice it! 15 min on and then 15 min off, several times a day
C - compress - this is more for support - ankle or knee braces, etc
E - elevate the injured area ABOVE the level of the heart
This will work for every injury - even as initial management for a fracture. However you might need more treatment, such as stretching or strengthening exercises, casting, surgery, etc. So defnitely get it checked out! |

I was an option 4 (not because I didn't know better, but because it was easy to convince myself that the pain was not anything serious ), although I am now an option 1 and a 3 (it only took a fractured tibia to turn me into an option 1 and 3 ). |

| I tend to try and "run it out" after a couple weeks if it is still nagging me then I'll head to the doctors. Reason being is I go to a clinc in Oshawa and don't trust getting only one opinion since I've had bad experiences there. |

This poll is a bit dicey...there are too many variables. Different injuries (type, severity) will require different treatments, for example.
It should result in some interesting discussion, though.

The point I was trying to make was that you shouldn't ignore any injury. That small nagging pain somewhere could potentially put you on the sidelines. I speak from stubborn experience.
Yes that should have been RICE not ICE.

as Dr. sllupul stated is undisputably the way athletes have treated injuries for years. So take a few minutes to pamper that injury.
Wishing you all injury free running....LLL |

| My lower body has been too majorly screwed up for the past few years to not take things seriously. Pretty much the first signs of pain (barring small aches and what not) I stop and rest it. If I'm not ok in a few days I go to physio. |

it really depends on what the injury is. i'd like to think that i have become knowledgeable enough to manage my body and make good jugement calls regarding whether to take an advil or go see a doctor.. _________________ 1st formally-sanctioned Transsexual Marathonner in World History

RICE is absolutely mandatory in my books but I also make sure to drink a lot of water and tons of fruit and vegetables... although I try to do this anyway.
I think the problem with this poll is it treats all injuries the same, as pointed out by other readers...
If it's just a case of feeling "creaky" or mildly achy, I'll try to run through it or do cross training (swimming and biking, particularly), but then I'll have an ice bath when I get back home for at least 5 minutes. |

After a few days rest, and no improvement, I make a sports medicine doctor a visit. Fortunately, he's able to see on the day I call (or the next day). Might as well take advantage of our health care system. Really gives me reassurance so I don't do something stupid (like run through an injury and make it worse). _________________ Louis
